Prevalence of Cytomegalovirus IgM Antibodies among Sudanese Cardiovascular Patients

Abstract
Aim/Background
There is an old statement hypothesize “cytomegalovirus as a possible etiological agent in cardiovascular disease. The study aimed to find the prevalence of cytomegalovirus IgM antibodies among Sudanese cardiovascular patients.
Methods
This was laboratory-based study, carried out in Khartoum state hospitals, included all cardiovascular patients during the study period. The data was collected from lab results (using ELISA known protocol) and structured questionnaire which includes demographic information’s.
Results
Results revealed that regarding the age grouping, description of patients in terms of minimum age (30) and maximum age (75), average age 44. Seropositive showed in 1 patient (4.3%) and seronegative in 23 (95.8%). The number of males was seropositive in 2(4.5%) and seronegative in 42 (95.5%) and total numbers of females were seropositive in 5(10%) and seronegative in 45(90%). Seroprevalence of CMV IgM antibodies among cardiovascular patients give positive results in 7(7.4%) and seroprevalence of CMV IgM antibodies give negative result in 87 (92.5%).
Conclusion
This study reported that the prevalence of CMV infections among the study population at Khartoum state, CMV-IgM positive present in 7.4% of all cardiovascular patients. By ELISA technique we can be able to detect the prevalence of the CMV- IgM antibodies in cardiovascular patients.
